Profile

Matthew joined Devon Chambers as a tenant in October 2026 after successfully completing his pupillage.

Originally from Devon, Matthew studied Law at Swansea University, before completing the Barrister Training Course (BTC) alongside an LLM at BPP University (Holborn). During his studies, Matthew  was awarded an Advocacy Scholarship and achieved a Distinction. During pupillage, he was further awarded the Ann Goddard Scholarship by Gray’s Inn. Prior to pupillage, Matthew worked as a paralegal in a leading criminal defence firm, giving him a solid grounding in working within the legal system.

Family

Matthew enjoys a wide-reaching family practice including both public and private matters. During his second six, Matthew has represented clients in multi-day Fact Finding Hearings in private children matters, represented both parents and Local Authorities in care proceedings and undertook work representing clients in financial remedy and domestic abuse proceedings.

Since becoming a tenant, Matthew has continued his broad family practice and is committed to building positive relationships with both instructors and clients.

Civil

Matthew is regularly instructed in a range of civil hearings such as small claims arising out of road traffic accidents, contractual disputes, credit hire matters and infant settlement approval hearings. Matthew has been instructed in civil applications on behalf of professional bodies, such as the local police force.

Crime

Matthew both prosecutes and defends, appearing in the Magistrates and the Crown Court. Matthew has represented client’s in regulatory matters in the Crown Court and continues to have a keen interested in regulatory matters. Matthew accepts instructions in wide a range of criminal work including committals for sentence, appeals against conviction and sentence and probation breaches. Matthew is a Grade 1 CPS Prosecutor.

Matthew is regulated by the Bar Standards Board.
