About Devon Chambers

A set of barristers, based in Plymouth, who provide expert advice and advocacy services throughout the South West.

Our commitment to you

Our aim is to provide an excellent service in all cases in which we are instructed. All criminal barristers will, at times, defend in cases in which the defendant is convicted and prosecute cases in which defendants are acquitted. In civil and family cases, there will be occasions when the client who we represent does not achieve the outcome they wanted. That is in the nature of an adversarial system of justice in which both sides are entitled to representation. Whatever the case, and whatever the outcome, our objective is to ensure that the client for whom we act has been excellently represented. As a result our website will only state that barristers acted in a case, without claiming a certain result to be a success.

Our history

Established in the late 1970s from its humble beginnings near Plymouth Magistrates’ Court, Devon Chambers has grown to become one of the most well-respected chambers on the Western Circuit. A succession of barristers, among them John Montague, Richard Hough, John Bush and Robert Linford (now His Honour Judge Linford), have led the chambers, nurturing its reputation while staying true to the principles upon which Devon Chambers was founded. At the heart of those principles is a commitment to deliver a first-rate service to all clients.

Jason Beal became Head of Chambers in 2012, overseeing our significant move in 2017 to our premises in The Crescent. Located in one of Plymouth’s most iconic buildings, the new chambers offer excellent conference facilities and state-of-the-art technology.

In recent years, Devon Chambers has expanded its areas of expertise with a flourishing family team. This has been achieved through a dedicated process of recruitment and training.

Devon Chambers celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019. The Devon Chambers’ team remains a very happy one and is looking forward to new opportunities and further expansion in the coming years.
