Based in historical Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, many of our members live in the beautiful surroundings of Devon and Cornwall. We are lucky enough to practise in one of the sunniest areas on the British mainland. From vast Atlantic-facing strips of golden sand to wild expanses of granite moorland, practitioners at Devon Chambers really do have the ability to achieve the ultimate work-life balance.
Devon Chambers is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. We aim to select candidates solely on merit irrespective of age, disability, gender reassignment, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.
Following a period of expansion Devon Chambers is recruiting to our Clerking Team. We have today placed two advertisements on our website (1) a Practice Director (Senior Clerk) and (2) a Senior Family and Civil Clerk.
Practice Director (Senior Clerk)
Devon Chambers is seeking to recruit an ambitious and strategic individual who will oversee the continued growth of Chambers across all areas of work.
Owing to an increase in the number of members of Devon Chambers, we are excited to announce that we are seeking to expand our Clerking Team by recruiting a Practice Director (Senior Clerk) who will be responsible for the overall management and development of Chambers including: managing the current clerking team; reinforcing our current workload; and exploring opportunities for growth into new areas. Candidates will need to demonstrate previous experience of clerking at a senior level, whether locally or nationally.
This new role within Devon Chambers follows a significant period of growth both in the number of members of Chambers but also in the work we are undertaking at all levels. The Practice Director will be accountable to the Head of Chambers and the Management Committee and will also be expected to work closely with our 27 members (including one KC). The role is likely to suit someone with previous senior level clerking experience who is seeking career progression and is designed to ensure the continued steady growth of Devon Chambers by recruiting new members.
It is a full time and permanent position.
At Devon Chambers we believe in a collegiate atmosphere and encourage our members to come into Chambers as often as possible. For that reason our clerks do not work remotely and are all based at 8 The Crescent, Plymouth, which we bought and refurbished nearly a decade ago. It provides a modern but traditional working environment within a short walk of Plymouth Combined Court and the Hoe. The building also provides parking, with spaces specifically reserved for the clerking staff. The building was purchased with expansion in mind and has enabled us to grow the number of members of Devon Chambers working across our three main Teams of Family, Civil and Criminal law. We seek to expand further across all areas of law. We do not believe in “hot desking” and there is plenty of space for all members of Chambers and clerks.
Salary: To be confirmed, depending on experience.
How to Apply: All applications will be treated in confidence and should be by way of CV and covering letter to jason.beal@devonchambers.co.uk
Please set out your experience, current salary and why you believe you would be suitable for this role.
Closing date: Applications to be received by 5pm on 10th October 2025.

In light of COVID-19 and in keeping with government guidance Devon Chambers launched the Devon Chambers’ Student Forum (DCSF) in 2020. The DCSF offers the opportunity to discuss all aspects of life at the Bar with members of Devon Chambers. The individual sessions will be conducted online using Zoom. Two of our barristers will be available to discuss any topics that a student wishes to cover. This could include, for example: Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) institutions; the Inns of Court; conversion courses; CVs and applications; mini-pupillage; pupillage; life at the Bar; areas of law; the future of the Bar and life on circuit. We are prepared to discuss anything that is related to a career at the Bar.
The DCSF is not the same as a mini pupillage, but is part of our aim to continue liaising with students interested in a career at the Bar during these uncertain times. All details about applying can be found via the link below:
